Shoe sizes change at the border: a US men’s 9 is a US women’s 10.5, a UK 8, an EU 42.5 and a Japanese 27. When you buy shoes online from another country you often need to translate your usual size. Shoe size conversion formulas
US men = 3 × foot length (in) − 22
The relationships come from Nike’s men’s footwear chart (retrieved 2026-10-15), which lists the five systems against foot length in sixteenths of an inch. Wikipedia explains the Paris point rule behind the EU numbers and the Brannock rule behind the US numbers. Nike’s own pages have two quirks: its UK column repeats 6 for men’s 6.5 and 7, and its women’s page prints UK and cm values half a size higher than the men’s page. The first matching row of the men’s page is used, so check a repeated UK size on the shoe’s own page.
Worked example
You wear a US men’s 9 and are buying shoes listed in UK sizes.
- Row: men 9 → women 10.5, UK 8, EU 42.5, Japan 27 cm.
- Foot length for the size: 26.2 cm (10 5/16 in).
- Check: 3 × 10.3125 − 22 = 8.94, which is size 9 within 0.06.
What to check when ordering abroad
- Men’s versus women’s: a unisex shoe is often labelled in men’s sizes; women should add 1.5.
- Half sizes: EU sizes move in steps of 2/3 cm, so European half sizes do not always match a US half size.
- Width: D is standard for men and B for women in the US; wide fits are labelled differently.
- Return policy: shoes often run half a size apart between brands, so buy from shops that accept returns.

How do I convert US shoe size to EU?
On Nike’s chart a US men’s 9 is EU 42.5 and a US men’s 10 is EU 44. There is no single formula, because EU sizes are based on the length of the shoe last in Paris points, but each half US size adds about half to one EU size.
How do I convert men’s to women’s sizes?

Why do UK and US sizes differ?
The UK scale starts at a different point from the US scale. For adult men’s sizes the UK number is one lower than the US men’s number, so US men’s 8 is UK 7.
Is the cm size on a shoe box my foot length?
Not exactly. Nike says the cm size on a box differs from foot length, because it describes the shoe. Use the foot length shown in the converter result for measuring.
