Jeans are labelled by a waist number in the United States and the UK, by a European size in France and Germany, and by letters on many websites. A size 29 in one country may be a 36 in another and an M in a third. This converter turns a jeans size into the other systems for women and men, using the conversion tables on Wikipedia’s Clothing sizes page.

There is no single arithmetic rule for jeans sizes, so the converter reads the rows of the tables printed on Wikipedia (retrieved 2026-10-15). In the women’s table the EU size is about 7 above the jeans size for the small sizes and the UK size is about 6 below the EU size. The men’s waist table pairs inch sizes with European two-size ranges.

A woman wears a US jeans size 29.

Row 29 of the table: EU 36, international M, UK 8, France 38, Italy 42.
Going the other way, an EU 40 matches jeans sizes 32 and 33, so the converter shows 32–33.

Using the conversion safely

Check the stretch: stretch denim can be bought a size down; rigid denim often cannot.
Length: inseam is separate. Wikipedia lists the European trouser lengths 34 to 48 against UK/US inseams 25/26 to 36.

Is the jeans waist size the real waist?
