A corset is sized by the measurement of the corset itself at the waist, not by your dress size or your own waist. That makes ordering confusing: a woman with a 28 inch waist may order a 24 inch corset. The reduction between the two is deliberate, since a corset is meant to shape a little. This calculator gives the size to order from your natural waist and your experience.

How to use the corset size calculator

  1. Find your natural waist: the narrowest part of the torso, usually an inch or two above the navel. Bend to the side and the crease shows where it is.
  2. Measure it with a soft tape over bare skin or thin clothing, standing normally and breathing out, tape level and snug.
  3. Enter the waist and your experience level.
  4. Read the size. Compare it with the maker’s own chart before ordering.

Corset size formula

corset size = natural waist − reduction, rounded to the nearest even inch
reduction = 4 in (beginner) or up to 6 in (experienced)

Angela Friedman advises corsets up to 4 inches smaller than the natural waist for beginners and up to 6 inches smaller for experienced wearers and “particularly squeezable” midsections; Playful Promises designs its corsets to reduce the waist by 4–5 inches and supplies the table below; Lucy’s Corsetry notes that many corset sites recommend 4–6 inches below the natural waist (all retrieved 2026-10-15). The calculator takes the reduction from this range and rounds to an even number, because corset sizes are even inches.

Worked example

Natural waist 28 inches, beginner.

  • Reduction 4 inches: 28 − 4 = 24 inches.
  • Playful Promises chart: a 27–28 inch natural waist takes size 24 in.
  • An experienced wearer would subtract up to 6 inches and look at a 22 inch corset.

Corset fitting notes

  • Leave a gap: 1–2 inches at the back is normal, according to Angela Friedman.
  • Brands differ: one maker builds a 3–4 inch reduction into the pattern and says not to subtract anything yourself; read the maker’s guide first.
  • Compressibility: a very muscular body compresses less than a soft one, so a smaller reduction is more comfortable.
  • Break in slowly: wear a new corset for short periods first, and stop if it hurts.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my corset size?

Measure your natural waist, the narrowest part of your torso, usually about an inch or two above the navel, and subtract the reduction the corset is designed for. Playful Promises says to deduct 4–5 inches, Angela Friedman up to 4 inches for beginners and up to 6 for experienced wearers.

Why do brands give different advice?

Lucy’s Corsetry notes that many corset makers recommend 4–6 inches below the natural waist, but the right figure depends on how compressible you are, how you will use the corset and whether you lace it closed. One maker, Luxe Noir, builds the reduction into its pattern and states that its sizes are cut for a natural waist 3 inches larger, so always read the maker’s own guide.

What gap should I leave at the back?

Angela Friedman says a corset should be worn with a small gap of 1–2 inches at the back, for comfort over the spine, rather than laced fully closed.

Does the corset size match dress size?

No. Corset sizes are inch measurements, usually even numbers from 18 to 40 or so, and have nothing to do with dress size. Use the Dress Size Calculator for clothing.

Is waist training safe?

This calculator only gives a size. Compression garments should never be painful, and people with health conditions should ask a doctor. A very muscular body compresses less than a soft one.
