A belt is sold by the length from the buckle to the hole you use most, and that is not the same number as your pants size. Most people need a belt about two inches bigger than the waist size printed on their trousers, and a little more for low-rise pants. This calculator applies that common rule, or uses a direct measurement through your belt loops, and gives the size in inches and centimetres.
How to use the belt size calculator
- Choose how you want to measure. "My pants size" is the quickest. "Measured through belt loops" is more accurate.
- Enter the number. For pants size use the waist number on the label (for example 34 for a 34-inch waist). For the loop method, thread a tape measure through the belt loops of the trousers you will wear with the belt, and read where the tape meets itself.
- Pick the rise (standard or low) if you used the pants size.
- Read the belt size. Belt sizes are given to the nearest whole inch. Low-rise pants show a range because the right add-on varies.
Belt size formula
Low-rise belt size = pants waist size + 3 to 4 in
Loop method: belt size = loop measurement, rounded to the nearest inch
The extra inches allow for the belt to overlap itself at the buckle and for the fabric of the trousers and belt loops. Retailer guides describe this "add 2 inches" rule as a good starting point for standard-rise trousers, and suggest adding 3 or 4 for low-rise pants and jeans. Measuring through the belt loops avoids guessing and is the more accurate method.
Worked example
- You wear 34-inch trousers with a standard rise: 34 + 2 = 36 in (91.4 cm).
- You wear 38-inch low-rise jeans: 38 + 3 = 41 in up to 38 + 4 = 42 in.
- You measure 35.4 in through the belt loops: rounded to the nearest inch, 35 in.
Belt size chart
The table below was calculated with the same formulas as the calculator (inches to centimetres at 2.54 cm per inch).
| Pants waist | Standard-rise belt | Low-rise belt | Waist (cm) | Standard belt (cm) |

| 28" | 30" | 31"–32" | 71.1 | 76.2 |
| 30" | 32" | 33"–34" | 76.2 | 81.3 |
| 32" | 34" | 35"–36" | 81.3 | 86.4 |
| 34" | 36" | 37"–38" | 86.4 | 91.4 |
| 36" | 38" | 39"–40" | 91.4 | 96.5 |
| 38" | 40" | 41"–42" | 96.5 | 101.6 |
| 40" | 42" | 43"–44" | 101.6 | 106.7 |
| 42" | 44" | 45"–46" | 106.7 | 111.8 |
| 44" | 46" | 47"–48" | 111.8 | 116.8 |
Things to keep in mind
- Pants size is a label. Someone who wears 34-inch pants may need a belt in 36 or even 38 depending on how the pants are cut. Measure through the loops if you can.
- Check where the maker measures. Some brands include the buckle in the length and others measure from the buckle fold to the middle hole. Read the size guide for the belt you are buying.
- Leather stretches. A belt that is snug when new often loosens a little with wear, so aim for the middle hole rather than the first or last.
- Know your trouser size. The Pants / Trouser Size Calculator and Jeans Size Calculator help find the waist number, and the Waist Size Calculator and Inseam Calculator cover other measurements.

There is no formal standard for belt sizing, so this page uses the common retailer rule of thumb and cites the guides that describe it. Always follow the size chart of the specific brand when it gives one.

Frequently asked questions
What size belt should I buy for a 34 waist?
For standard-rise pants add 2 inches, so a belt size of 36. For low-rise pants add 3 to 4 inches, so 37 to 38. Measuring through the belt loops of your trousers is more accurate.
Why is my belt size bigger than my pants size?
Belts are measured from the buckle to the hole you use, and the belt must overlap itself and wrap around the waistband and fabric. The extra inches allow for that, which is why the rule is pants size plus 2.
How do I measure my belt size without a belt?
Thread a tape measure through the belt loops of the trousers you will wear, standing relaxed, and read the length. Round to the nearest inch. This is the loop method in the calculator.
How do I measure a belt I already own?
Lay the belt flat and measure from where the buckle meets the leather (not including the buckle) to the hole you use most. Some brands include the buckle in their size, so check their guide. The Waist Size Calculator covers measuring the waist itself.
Is belt size the same across brands?
No. There is no formal standard for belts, so brands vary in how they measure and in what they call a size. Use this result as a guide and the brand chart when one is given.
