Necklace lengths are sold by name as much as by number: a choker, a princess, a matinee. Each name stands for a place on the body, and the number only tells you how long the chain is. This calculator takes the length of a necklace and your neck circumference, names the style, says where it should fall and tells you how much chain you have beyond the neck.

Measure around the base of the neck where a choker would sit; the necklace must be longer than that.

How to use the necklace length calculator

  1. Enter the necklace length in inches or centimetres. Use the full chain length, with the clasp closed.
  2. Measure your neck. Put a soft tape or a piece of string around the base of the neck, where a choker would sit, and enter the circumference.
  3. Read the style, where it sits and the pairing hint.
  4. Check the slack, the chain beyond the neck circumference. A higher number means a longer drop.

Necklace length formula

style = the band that contains the chain length (table below)
slack = necklace length − neck circumference
1 inch = 2.54 cm

The bands and placements below follow Blue Nile’s necklace length chart (retrieved 2026-10-16). The chart gives princess as a single length, 18 inches; this calculator treats chains from just over 16 up to just under 20 inches as princess so every length has a name. The boundaries are a choice of this page and other shops draw them slightly differently.

Worked example

A necklace is 18 inches (45.7 cm) long and your neck measures 14 inches (35.6 cm).

  • 18 inches lies in the princess band, which Blue Nile describes as resting just below the collarbone and suiting crew or boatneck tops.
  • Slack: 18 − 14 = 4 inches (10.2 cm), which is how far the chain extends beyond a snug fit around the neck.

Slack for common neck sizes

The table is calculated from the formula above. “Too short” means the chain is shorter than the neck circumference and cannot close around the neck.

Choosing a necklace length

  • Neckline first. High necklines suit matinee lengths, scoop and strapless necklines suit chokers, and crew or boatneck tops suit princess lengths.
  • Pendant weight. A large pendant pulls a chain lower, so allow for the drop.
  • Chain thickness. Thick chains can look shorter than their stated length.
  • Extenders. If you are unsure, go up slightly or add an extender.
  • Layering. Leave about 2 inches between pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What are the standard necklace lengths?

Blue Nile’s chart lists collar (14 inches or less), choker (14 to 16 inches), princess (18 inches), matinee (20 to 24 inches), opera (24 to 30 inches) and rope (30 inches and longer). Other jewellers move the boundaries by an inch or two, so treat the names as bands rather than exact cut-offs.

What length necklace is best for a pendant?

Most pendants are worn at 18 inches, the princess length, which rests just below the collarbone. A larger pendant pulls the chain lower, so a pendant with a heavy drop may look best on a slightly shorter chain.

How do I measure my neck for a necklace?

Wrap a soft tape or a piece of string around the base of the neck, where a choker would sit, and measure the length. A necklace must be at least that long. Add a little ease for a comfortable fit and choose a length from the table by where you want it to fall.

Why does the same length look different on different people?

Neck size and frame change where a chain falls, and Blue Nile notes that thick chains look shorter and large pendants pull a necklace lower. The slack figure shows the difference between your neck and the chain, which is a useful guide when comparing lengths.

How far apart should layered necklaces be?

Blue Nile suggests leaving about 2 inches between pieces so each one stands out. Use different lengths from the table, for example a choker with a princess and a matinee. See the Bangle Size Calculator and Ring Size Calculator for other jewellery sizes.
