An anklet is a chain or cord that has to move with your foot all day, so it needs a little more length than the ankle itself. Many people buy the “average” length and find it either slipping towards the heel or pressing into the skin. This calculator starts from your ankle circumference, adds the allowance for the fit you want, and tells you the finished anklet length and its general size class.
How to use the anklet size calculator
- Measure your ankle. Wrap a flexible tape snugly just above the ankle bone, or wherever you want the anklet to sit. With a piece of string, mark where the ends meet and measure the string with a ruler.
- Enter the circumference in centimetres, millimetres or inches.
- Choose the fit: closer, comfortable or loose.
- Read the anklet length to buy, the allowance added and the general size class. Compare the length with the length printed on the product page.
Anklet size formula
allowance: snug 1.25 cm, comfortable 2 cm, loose 2.5 cm
The allowances and the size classes are from the anklet size guide of Magpie Gems (retrieved 2026-10-16). Bluestone’s guide gives a similar range of half an inch to an inch. Your ankle measurement is the circumference of the ankle; the finished anklet length is always slightly longer so you can move comfortably.
| Preferred fit | Add to ankle measurement | Example: ankle 21 cm |
|---|---|---|
| Closer / snug | 1.25 cm (½ in) | 22.25 cm |
| Comfortable / everyday | 2 cm (¾ in) | 23 cm |
| Loose / relaxed | 2.5 cm (1 in) | 23.5 cm |
General anklet size classes
| General size | Finished anklet length (cm) | Finished anklet length (in) | Often suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small / Petite | 20 – 23 | 8 – 9 | Petite ankles or a closer fit |
| Medium | 23 – 25 | 9 – 10 | A common adult women’s anklet length |
| Large | 25 – 28 | 10 – 11 | Larger ankles or a more relaxed fit |
| Extra Large | 28+ | 11+ | Larger ankles or an intentionally loose fit |
Worked example
Your ankle measures 21 cm and you want an everyday comfortable fit.
- Allowance: 2 cm for a comfortable fit.
- Anklet length: 21 + 2 = 23 cm (9.1 inches).
- Size class: 23 cm is the bottom of the Medium band, which runs from 23 to 25 cm. A closer fit (22.25 cm) would be Small, and a looser one (23.5 cm) Medium.
Anklet length for common ankle sizes
This table is generated from the formula above. Lengths are in centimetres.
| Ankle (cm) | Snug length | Comfort length | Loose length | Size class (comfort) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18 | 19.25 | 20 | 20.5 | Small / Petite |
| 19 | 20.25 | 21 | 21.5 | Small / Petite |
| 20 | 21.25 | 22 | 22.5 | Small / Petite |
| 21 | 22.25 | 23 | 23.5 | Medium |
| 22 | 23.25 | 24 | 24.5 | Medium |
| 23 | 24.25 | 25 | 25.5 | Large |
| 24 | 25.25 | 26 | 26.5 | Large |
| 25 | 26.25 | 27 | 27.5 | Large |
| 26 | 27.25 | 28 | 28.5 | Extra Large |
Choosing the right anklet
- Adjustable chains. Chain anklets with a lobster clasp and an extension chain adjust by a few centimetres, so choose a length that puts your measurement in the middle of the range.
- Between sizes. Choose the larger option so the anklet does not feel restrictive.
- Not too loose. A loose anklet should still hang just below the ankle bone. Anything looser can slip below the heel and catch.
- Layering. To layer three anklets, wear them snug, comfortable and loose, as The Jewellery Room suggests.
The result is general guidance. Brands do not size anklets in exactly the same way, so check the measurements on each product page. For other jewellery see the Ring Size Calculator and the Necklace Length Calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How do I measure my ankle for an anklet?
Wrap a flexible tape just above the ankle bone, or wherever you want the anklet to sit, snug but not tight, and read the circumference. With string, mark where it overlaps and measure it against a ruler. Bluestone adds that you should be able to slide a finger between the tape and your ankle.
How much should I add to my ankle measurement?
Magpie Gems suggests about 1.25 cm (½ inch) for a closer fit, 2 cm (¾ inch) for comfortable everyday wear and 2.5 cm (1 inch) for a loose, relaxed fit. Bluestone gives half an inch to an inch. This calculator uses the Magpie Gems values.
What is the average anklet size?
A common adult women’s anklet is about 23–25 cm (9–10 inches) long, though women’s anklets generally run from about 8 to 11 inches. The average is only a starting point because ankle circumference and fit preferences differ.
Should I choose the larger size if I am between sizes?
Yes. The Jewellery Room and Magpie Gems both suggest the larger or longer adjustable option so the anklet does not feel restrictive when you move. An anklet that is too tight can also break with everyday movement.
How should an anklet sit on the leg?
It should sit above the ankle bone without pinching and without sliding under the heel. For a loose style it should hang just below the ankle bone. See the Bangle Size Calculator for wrist jewellery and the Necklace Length Calculator for necklaces.
